Each year, the average American throws away 81 pounds of clothing and of that, only 15% gets recycled*. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we’re recognizing the organizations that help us contribute to the good of the environment.
Bras may not be the first thing that come to mind when you think about recycling, but at Soma®, we’ve been doing our part to help reduce waste for nearly 10 years through our Bra Donation & Bra Recycling programs. These programs encourage our customers to donate their gently worn bras to Soma, where they’re then sorted and sent to our partners The Bra Recyclers and I Support the Girls (ISTG). To date, we’ve donated or repurposed over 2 million bras.
So what happens to the bras you donate? Bras in new or very gently used condition go to ISTG and are distributed to women at domestic violence and homeless shelters across the country. Donated bras that are more loved are sent to the Bra Recyclers where their components are then recycled into new bras and other textiles.
We’re proud to support these organizations year round. Click the links below to learn more about their missions.
