Soma Helps Women Living Beyond Breast Cancer

Every company has a few causes that hit close to home, and Living Beyond Breast Cancer — an incredible organization whose mission is to connect people with trusted breast cancer information, as well as a community of support — is certainly one of ours. Breast cancer has directly impacted members of our own Soma family, and it’s our goal to bring awareness to a disease that touches so many lives each year. Since 2004, Soma and our sister brands Chico’s and White House Black Market have donated nearly $8 million to LBBC.

Cathy Devine, Soma’s Vice President of Innovation, is not only a survivor herself but also a driving force behind our collection of post-surgical bras. Her story inspires our mission to help women Living Beyond Breast Cancer, as well as reinforces the need for women to do regular breast checks. (Learn how to do a breast self-check from the National Breast Cancer Foundation.)

“This is a cause that is very near and dear to my heart,” she says. “I’ve been blessed with 20 years of good health since my original breast cancer surgery in 1998. Just recently, I discovered a lump on my chest that was determined to be a recurrence of breast cancer.  With the tumor and some lymph nodes removed, my next step is chemotherapy, which will be followed by radiation treatment – the same path that so many women have traveled before me.”

Cathy’s whole family has been impacted because they carry the BRCA1 genetic defect, with her grandmother, mother, aunt, younger sister, and even a great uncle diagnosed, some as early as age 32.

“I have participated in numerous fundraising efforts with the goal of helping other women, and to find a cure for breast cancer with the hope that my own daughters, my niece, and all women will no longer have to feel this threat to their health.”

At Soma for 6 years, Cathy led an initiative in 2013 to interview other survivors about their need for bras.

“I’m grateful to the LBBC members who participated in our focus groups that led to our decision to offer post surgical bras on and in select boutiques, because at Soma, we truly want every woman to feel like her most beautiful self. I’m overwhelmed every time I read a customer note expressing appreciation for her Soma post-surgical fit experience and how she feels feminine, beautiful, and confident once again when she finds the right bra. We all deserve that!”
